A Nix Romantic Suspense Review – Aftershock by Jill Sorenson (5 Stars)
THERE’S A FINE LINE
As an emergency paramedic, Lauren Boyer is dedicated and highly capable. Until an earthquake strikes, trapping her beneath the freeway with a group of strangers-including Iraq war veteran Garrett Wright…
BETWEEN PERIL AND PASSION
Handsome and take-charge Garrett aids Lauren in her rescue efforts, even as the steely look in his eyes seems to hide dark secrets. When a gang of escaped convicts goes on the attack, Garrett’s bravery makes him more than a courageous bystander to Lauren. If they can save the others before time runs out, maybe, just maybe, they can explore the fire igniting between them-if the truth about who he really is doesn’t pull them apart forever….
Wow, this book blew me away. From start to finish, I was always engrossed and finished it as fast as I could. I guessed the twist before it was revealed but it was such a biggie it didn’t matter as I had no idea how it would be resolved. This was a very stark look at the human desire to live and how it brings out both the best and worst of people.
Lauren was possibly my favourite character in this book. I like heroines who take charge of what they want and are completely unapologetic about their actions. As soon as she got out of that ambulance, strapped on her big-girl panties and started being one of the most important parts of the survival mission, I knew I would like this book. I always say, liking the hero should be a given in romance but the heroine is a big added bonus!! She impressed me the most with the way she dealt with the most perilous of the immediate dangers they faced in the form of the escaped prisoners that were with them. Although one of them tried to rape her, she still didn’t give him the pleasure of knowing just how much he intimidated her. She avoided him, recognised him as a danger, but never did I see her sit down and cower (which I would have been doing in her situation). I loved how she used her training to keep calm under the immense pressure and just did what she had to.
Garrett was a good hero but I recognised that he had some secrets as soon as we saw him. An ex-army vet, he was the muscle of the group and the man with the tactical no-how to get them out of the situation if it was at all possible. He was the strongest of the group and did the majority of the “dirty-work”. He was the one who took it upon himself to stand guard and make sure everyone was safe by being the physical defense to the threat of the criminals. I liked that everyone had a role within the group and, of course, the fact that Garrett was represented as the strong one made him that more appealing. It was a very odd situation for me as a reader when we found out the “truth” about him that is mentioned in the blurb. It didn’t make me think any of less of him, I judged him solely on his actions in the book, but then it made me question what would happen if the same revelation happened in real life…I don’t know if I would be as forgiving and that made me think a little less of myself.
The romance between them was yummy. You could see the sexual tension rising as they continued to deny their feelings for each other due to their situation. The fact they kept running away from each other (him especially) made the tension delicious and made the inevitable sex scene that much more satisfying. They were both strong capable people but I enjoyed the fact that Lauren was the more aggressive pursuer of their relationship. Honestly, it was drool-worthy!
This was a romance set in the most horrific of situations. I loved both the lead characters and truly wanted them to have a relationship. The side characters were fantastic and they kept the plot moving outside of the romance thread… I ignored life whilst reading this book because I really could not put it down! It was a sexy, fast-paced thriller of a novel and it gets two thumbs up from me!
