This collection of novellas features paranormal pairings romance readers will pine for. Vampires, demons, werewolves, faeries and even a mermaid will satisfy the darkest of cravings.
Hidden – Sharon Ashwood
Rafe returns to the Devries werewolf pack to rescue his people from a scheming fey beauty. Pitting his will against her wits, he plans to seduce his way free of the ice queen’s trap. But surrender means death for the fey and little does Rafe know that he’s gambling with more than hearts.
While reading Hidden I had a real sense of deja vu, something about this story really reminds me of something I’ve seen or read before, but really can’t remember what or where. However I do know that it doesn’t live up to the recollection I have of that previous experience. It’s not a bad little story, it just didn’t grab me and drag me in from the start.
One Soul to Share – Lori Devoti
Mermaid, Sarina Neri, is desperate to regain her sister’s soul. The sea hag who has it wants a man who can survive in her realm, underwater, in exchange. Fortunately, Sarina has found such a man, a vampire Nolan Moore. Unfortunately, Nolan wants the soul too, for himself.
One Soul to Share was probably the one book in this collection I was most looking forward to reading. Having read and loved Nicole Peeler’s Jane True series, which is vampire/half selkie romance, I had high hopes. Unfortunately this one really didn’t live up to my expectations, which to be fair were probably unrealistically high. I just couldn’t get invested in the story, didn’t particularly relate to either of the main characters and carried on reading only to finish the story. A real shame.
Cruel Enchantment – Michele Hauf
While investigating the vicious werewolf blood games, vampire Revin Parker struggles with his attraction to the faerie informant, Sabrina Kriss. Six months earlier she had cursed him with an addiction to faery dust. Can they risk the desire that demands they fall in love with the one who could become their worst nightmare?
Cruel Enchantment I have to actually confess I found rather funny and I don’t know if I was actually meant to! The scenes describing Revin while under the influence of faery dust are just hilarious. Probably not meant to laugh at the drug addict though…. The rest of the story is pretty damn good too. While trying to stop the bad guys Bree and Revin also find themselves fighting the attraction and addiction that could ultimately complete or destroy them both.
Enemy Embrace – Patti O’Shea
Nicole Ruiz is a Psi tracker, an elite vampire hunter who can shadow her quarry anywhere. Daktan is an executioner assigned by the demon king to eliminate a rogue vampire who’s killing humans. When Nicole discovers the rogue is stronger than she expected, she offers Dak an alliance. She’s make a deal with the devil himself if that’s what it took to avenge her family.
Patti O’Shea, you are a new favourite author! Please could I have a Daktan or my own to keep and stroke and pet? Ok creepy I know, but man is he HOT! Dark, brooding alpha male who fights the attraction he feels to this feisty independent woman while trying to take out the vampire who destroyed her family… it’s definitely one that grips you from the start. And the sparks definitely fly when they do get together. I loved it!
Another mixed bag from this anthology, while I didn’t love them all there is definitely something there for everyone, which I guess is the point really! ☺ For me, Enemy Embrace was the pick of the bunch with Cruel Enchantment not too far behind!
