Today, I am so happy to be able to host Kim Dare. Kim is an auto-buy author for me and has been ever since I first read her amazing MM BDSM Shape-shifter novel Duck! This book remains one of my favorite all time novels. She has since produced many short stories, novellas and novels within the Genre… she is my go-to author for novella length BDSM. I highly recommend her Sex Sells and Pack Discipline series.

Lets hear what she has to say….

Kink, Love and a Happy Ending.

By Kim Dare

I never set out to write BDSM erotic romance as such. If I had any plan at all, I set out to write books about people like me, and perhaps, to some extent at least, to write the kind of books that I felt were missing from the market place when I first started to take writing seriously.

I don’t think anyone with Google could find it difficult to track down BDSM erotic fiction or BDSM porn. Now, I should probably take a moment here to make it clear that I’m not saying that with any judgement toward those stories. Some of them provided my first hints that there were other people out there who like leather just as much as I do! I’m very grateful to them for that.

From blatantly one-handed reads, to the darkest and most extreme things you can find, if it involves BDSM, I have probably read a fair bit of it at one time or another. But, while there were plenty of good stories I could read when I was in one kind of mood, there was nothing that helped me out when I felt a different way.

I soon realised that, whenever I needed a proper comfort read, I had to head back into vanilla territory. Maybe the stories I wanted to read were out there and I just didn’t know what to type into the search engines to find them, but I really would have appreciated being able feel kinky and comforted at the same time and nothing I found gave me that feeling.

I didn’t care if the people in the story I found were black, white, old, young, same-sex or opposite-sex. I didn’t care if they turned into wolves on occasions or drank each other’s blood. It wasn’t about finding a mirror image of myself. I just wanted the characters to be kinky, fall in love and live happily ever after.

Maybe it’s about knowing there are still good people out there, and that they’re kinky as hell. Or it could be about something as simple as getting to laugh along with someone who is going through the same thing as you. Maybe its pure escapism or a reminder that happy ever afters are possible—even for people who prefer leather collars to diamond rings.

I’m not sure how to describe the quality I searched for as a reader or that I’m aiming for as a writer. The closest I can get is that it’s a cross between the feeling of afterglow mixed with aftercare. The feeling a sub might get when hugged by his or her dom after a really intense scene.

I originally wrote just for myself and my characters, but if I’ve come to imagine anyone reading my stories, the picture in my head is of a sub who’s come home after a really bad day feeling fed up with the world. They curl up under a blanket with a huge mug of tea and reach for a book that might make them feel a bit better.

Some people have said I write stories that are cute as well as kinky, or sweet as well as sexy, I’ll cop to both of those. Some of the stories I write are more serious, but I also want to write stories that show BDSM romance can be just as light and fluffy, or as funny, or as silly, or as anything else as they’re vanilla equivalent. (Although I’ll never call anything anyone writes “BDSM-lite” – what a horrible, patronising term!)

For me BDSM isn’t about how many lashes someone can take or how harsh a scene can be, it’s about the way the the character feels when the whip kisses their skin, and in my stories it’s also about how that whipping gets them closer to their happy ending.

I’ve now written 85 stories that have been accepted for publication, and for me it’s still all about having the kink, the love, and the happy ending all in one place.

  1. Fantastic post Kim and I love your stories! I think the first ones I read were Whispers and Silent Night and I was hooked immediately. They're just so damned well written and the intensity between the characters is breathtaking.

  2. Loved your post. I've had your name and books on my TBR list for awhile. I'll definitely be moving them to the top of my list.

  3. Thanks for the great post! I love the phrase "comfort read". There are times when I will go back and reread a book because of the feeling I get while reading it. It's like that cup of hot chocolate on a cold day. Or a style of book that feels right at the time.

  4. Sweet kink makes me very happy…I love the idea that a couple can have it all, and that hot secrets lurk behind closed doors. Can't wait to try your m/m stuff, it's my favorite genre of all!

  6. BDSM books were books that people used to read "in the closet". But now there's no reason to hide what we're reading. Now we can enjoy any book we want and anywhere we want. The only thing you may have to explain is why you look a little flushed. Thank you for participating in this great event.

  9. First of all, Congrats on all your books. That's fantastic. Sometimes when I read a book, all I want is how fast it can make my panties wet and how many times. And sometimes, I just want a fantastic love story between two people who have a lot of challenges to be together. Whether it's a BDSM story, historical, cowboy, paranormal, gblt or contemporary. I just want to read about something

  10. Wow! 85 accepted publication book! That is just amazing to me. I have to have the love and HEA or at least HFN. I love the romance of the stories, whether the characters are vanilla or kinky.
