Roni Loren is an author I heard about from GoodReads. Because of my lists, I often get recommended books in the BDSM genre and apparently this was an author I “HAD to try”. I did and I liked it a lot. I now follow her on twitter and, when the review pile gets under control, I have every plan to read book two. I am really quite excited that she agreed to particpate and offer such an awesome giveaway!

Here’s what she has to say…

First, thanks for inviting me to be here and participate in this awesome event. : )  When I was invited, I was asked to write on any topic regarding BDSM that I was interested in or passionate about. Well, today I’ve decided to talk about one of my little pet peeves about how some people view BDSM stories.

As most of you know, there is a BDSM book out there for everyone. You can find things as extreme and out there as you can imagine (and probably many things you’ve never even thought of); you can find sweet, romantic kink; you can even find ones that get you laughing (in a good way). That’s the beauty of the kink–there is no ONE RIGHT WAY.

So when I hear people dismiss certain BDSM books with terms like “BDSM lite”, “faux BDSM”, or “vanilla posing as BDSM”, it kind of makes me twitchy.

The truth of the matter is most people who are practicing BDSM in real life are not in full-time Master/slave relationships, they’re not frequenting kink clubs every weekend, and they’re not having *serious face* sex all the time. They’re typical people with regular jobs and families who just happen to be kinky behind closed doors. And that means there can be humorous moments and awkward moments along with the intense ones. I mean, come on, if the Dom loses his grip on a flogger and it flies across the room, someone is going to snicker. And all of it can still be sexy…and kinky. It doesn’t make those people or stories about those people any less authentic.

So I’m not afraid to put humor in my stories or have a submissive character make a sarcastic remark in the middle of a scene (though she may have to pay for it depending on her Dom’s mood.) I want to write about every day people who discover that BDSM and power exchange feed something inside them. And I don’t want anyone who reads my books and thinks–I’ve had these feelings and desires but I could never do “real” BDSM because that’s some “out there” world I can never be a part of–to shy away from trying some things.

Everyone (real people and story characters) can find what works for them and there should be no “BDSM police” determining who is allowed in the “super official club” and who is not. The only guideline I make sure I follow is the Safe, Sane, Consensual credo and making sure that kink isn’t portrayed as something to be cured or fixed. Beyond that, I follow the characters’ leads. Just like real life, some are going to crave the more extreme stuff, others will fall on the gentler side of the spectrum. I’m just here to tell their stories. : )

And here’s a little snippet of my latest, MELT INTO YOU:

Jace watched as she gnawed her lip, her nerves evident. But he could tell the temptation to open up to them was there too. He walked over to the edge of the hot tub and propped his forearms on it.

“As my sub, I expect you to be open with me. If you’re not, I’ll eventually draw out whatever those desires are by other means. You won’t be able to hide them forever. But I’m not going to command you to share with us right now if you’re not ready.” He reached out and cupped her cheek, holding her gaze. “But know that you’re safe with me. And with Andre. No judgment. I guarantee that for every dark fantasy you have, we probably have a hundred more sordid ones to match. Especially Andre, he’s a sick bastard.”

“Hey, wait a second,” Andre protested.

She smiled and the anxiety pinching her features seemed to ease as she took in his words. She nodded, her eyes not leaving his. “Thank you.”

He had the urge to bend down and press his lips to hers. Just because. But he held off. If they weren’t in the middle of a D/s scene, he needed to keep his distance. That kind of casual intimacy was not what either of them had signed up for. “Let me grab you a towel and get you out of here.”

The minute he turned his back, her soft voice halted him. “I . . . I have a capture fantasy.”

The words shot straight to his groin and snapped him right back to what he was supposed to be focused on with Evan—sex. But he didn’t move, knowing that if he faced her she may lose her nerve to continue. “Okay.”

“Two rogue cops. Arresting me. Being rough. Taking what they want from me however they want it. Forcing me to get them off.”

Holy hell. Jace closed his eyes and took a long breath, his body thrumming from the erotic images assaulting his brain. His cock hardened to the point of agony. She wanted to be manhandled and fucked by two men? The idea set fire to the darkest parts of him—appealed to the primitive core of his dominant streak.

Part of him wanted to whirl around, grab her, and make that fantasy come true for her. Right. This. Minute. But she wasn’t ready for that kind of thing yet. He’d never done a capture scene, but he knew they were seriously intense. The pretense of no consent—even with a safe word—was a powerful thing for the psyche to process. For someone so new to D/s, she could get too freaked out to enjoy it. Plus, he had no idea if she was emotionally strong enough to handle that kind of mind fuck. He hadn’t forgotten those cuts he’d found on her the night they’d slept together.

A frown touched his lips. There was no way he could take that risk with her. That was the kind of thing you did with a long-term partner, one you’d built total trust with. The type of relationship he’d never have with her, or anyone else for that matter. He wasn’t built for trust anymore.

But it didn’t mean they still couldn’t have a great time tonight doing a whole list of other things.

His frown lifted, his darkening mood rallying at the thought.

He grabbed a thick towel from one of the benches and went back to the hot tub. “Thank you for trusting us with that. I know that wasn’t easy for you.”

She nodded and stared down at the water. Jace ventured a glance at Andre and almost burst out laughing. The guy looked like he was in pain. Probably from the raging hard-on he suspected Andre was hiding beneath the water.

Andre checked that Evan wasn’t looking in his direction and mouthed, “Lucky bastard.”

Jace grinned, although he did feel a little sorry for the guy. Andre had watched Evan get off, sat with her while she was naked, and had heard about a fantasy that he could definitely help fulfill. All without being invited into their bed for the night.

“Let’s get you out of here, babe,” Jace said, offering a hand to Evan.

She peeked up at him from under her lashes, but before she took his hand, she slid along the bench of the hot tub toward Andre. Andre froze as she neared him, as if he were afraid if he moved anything, he’d maul her. Lifting out of the water, high enough to give both men a view of the top curve of her luscious breasts, she leaned over and laid a lingering kiss on his cheek. Andre closed his eyes, and Jace could almost see him quivering with restraint.

“Thanks for the chat, Andre. And for being such a gentleman,” she said, a shy note to her voice.

Andre cleared his throat. “Anytime, bella. Any. Time.”

Jace heard Andre’s unspoken offer. I want you. Just ask. He doubted Evan had missed the intent behind the words.

Something tightened low in Jace’s gut, the conflicting feelings boiling over. Seeing the little spark between her and Andre had him hot all over, but also ridiculously jealous. Her cop fantasy proved she at least was a little open to ménage, so he could probably guide her down that path. And Lord, she’d be gorgeous bound and spread for the two of them. But goddamn it, he didn’t know if he could share her.

And sharing was what he did. Who he was.

Roni, I love this post for so many reasons. You've summed up why there is no One Twuuue Way in kink – and why negotiation, consent, and self-awareness are critical precursors to safe, risk-aware play.

And yeah-yeah to the funny in the dungeon! 🙂

  2. Roni, thanks for this post! Thank you also for sharing with us the excerpt from your book! We are all different and so why would sex of all things be the same for everyone. Carin

  3. I have read Crash into You…Still into You..and just finished Melt into You…and LOVED them…I cannot wait for the next…these books are awesome…Thank you!!

  4. You’re right, too many people think any kink has to mean the kinkster cannot enjoy sex without either damaging or being damaged. Awesome that you see differently. And sure, I’d love a free book!

  5. Great post! I so agree with you— there is no wrong or right as long as the basic safety rules are followed!

  6. *sigh* I love Andre!

I’ve read “Still” and “Melt” – loved them both!

Great post, Roni! I use the term “BDSM lite” but in a good way. I like to let readers know they’re find a focus on sensuality and trust in the sexy scenes rather than lots of whips and chains.:-)

  7. I agree 100%, Roni. I wish everybody felt this way, rather than judging others for their preferences (in writing/reading and in real life!).

  8. Great post.It would be nice if we could all except and enjoy our individuality rather than judge and put everything into “boxes”.

  9. Thank you for such a great post! Loved the excerpt, I have to get this book!

  10. What a great post. I’ve only read a few BDSM books that has some funny moments and as it turns out, they seem to be my most fav.
When I review a book or read a review, I do prefer the reviewer to share how heavy the BDSM is in the book. I’ve read some real dark ones and some light ones and although I totally agree there is no “right” way, I still like to read what a reviewer has termed the story.

Thanks for the chance to win.

  11. Great post, I've been reading BDSM stories for more than a year and have found all kinds of varieties of it, which makes reading them so much more enjoyable. I love to laugh with the characters, cry and then sigh at the end…thanks for the opportunity 🙂

Thanks for reminding me to go reread MELT now. *happy sigh* I swear, your books get better and better each time. (I'm not in the running for the books, since I have them all already. I'm getting twitchy waiting for the next one. And then Grant's story. *checking watch and tapping foot*).

  13. This was a Great Excerpt, thank you for sharing it with Us, your book sounds like a Fantastic Read.

  15. Great post, Roni! I love your point of how humor can still work in BDSM scenes and relationships. Being serious all the time is too much pressure. 🙂

  16. I want to go to The Ranch, lol. Thanks so much for the great post and I can't wait to read more from this series.

  18. I just stumbled onto this blog (specifically this post though I don't remember where from) and you have me intrigued. I've never really read romance fiction as I always felt many sex scenes were just too ridiculously written but I am ready to be proven wrong.

The extract here has definitely whetted my appetite and so I have to enter the giveaway 🙂
