Today, I have the pleasure of hosting the wonderful Melissa Schroeder. The Little Harmless series is one of my favorite BDSM series (although one of the books isn’t BDSM!) and is one of the first that comes to mind when anyone asks me for a recommendation. The characters are fabulous and the plots angsty and delicious….

Anyway, here is what she has to say….

I recently attended the Authors After Dark in New Orleans where I was on a panel with some authors from the genre. Joey Hill (yeah, I did not attack her and was very respectful), Eliza Gayle, Tilly Greene and Sasha White were on the panel with me and it hit me again just how different we all write, even though we write in the same genre. And because of that, we write very different characters.

It is always important to me to stay true to the character. When I first started writing, many folks preached that the only TRULY good book was plot driven. Of course, I ignored them. For every book that gripped me, it was the characters that pulled me in. Naturally, I went that way in my writing. And because of that, when I started writing BDSM, it made sense that their need to play would be very personal. It was one reason that while Harmless is considered a BDSM series, it isn’t always BDSM and didn’t start out that way. I had some nasty emails when I did not make A Little Harmless Addiction a BDSM erotic romance. Kai and Jocelyn were not into the lifestyle.

So, how do you write three-dimensional characters? You make it about their journey. All of them have unique journeys. In ALH Obsession, Evan is a Dom because early in his life, he lost control of his body. His mother used him to be able to feed her drug habit. Because of that, he needed control in the bedroom. May Aiona, his heroine, had taken on the responsibilities that no young woman should have to after her mother died in a car accident. She was a take-charge kind of woman, and because of that, she had partners who always expected her to be in charge in bed. She needed a Dom and believe me, Evan was happy to take the job. I try to make sure there are reasons for every one of my characters to be involved in BDSM.

Their need for submission and Dominance are personal. For that reason, there are differing levels in all my books. I think for a truly engaging read, an author needs to ensure that there is a reason for the BDSM in the book. Games in bed are one thing. Everyone likes a little something different. Maybe a little tying up, or spanking, but for someone who needs BDSM in their bedroom, there is another level. For me, I try to weave the character’s need for BDSM into their development. It allows readers to really understand the character—their needs, wants and fears. I never add BDSM for the sake of BDSM. It’s similar to just adding another sex scene to expand the book. That is not the way I write, and I try my best to make sure every scene, whether it is just dinner with the hero and heroine to the most extreme of BDSM scenes, has a reason for that character. To me, it enriches the experience for the readers and well, for me 🙂

  1. Melissa, but I love being attacked! (lol) Seriously, I was so flattered to be a panel with you all – it was great to be included in such august company for the BDSM genre. And you and I are 100% on the same page about the character-driven vs plot-driven thing. To me, that's the appeal of writing erotic romance, and particularly BDSM, with the intense emotional exchanges. Anyhow, thanks for

  2. I am a HUGE fan of Melissa's Harmless series and I love all the characters and their story. I devour each and every one of them the moment they are released. The BDSM elements in this series is only one reason why I love these books; it's because I have grown to love the characters as I read the book and the BDSM only enriches the story when warranted. My absolutely fave Doms in this

  3. That’s why I love your books is that the characters have depth and personality. There isn’t one yet that I didn’t enjoy.

  4. Really love this series and haven’t had a chance to snag this story yet, so thanks for the giveaway.

  5. I am a huge fan of the Harmless series and it is not just the BDSM elements, it is the characters. Your stories are awesome and I fall in love with the characters.

  8. I’m sure Joey appreciated you not attacking her but I’m not sure how you did it! LOL!

I haven’t read any of your books….yet…Melissa, but I looked forward to them!

  9. It's the characters and their motivations that draw me into a story. I've recently found your Harmless series and the characters are what makes your books such great reads!

  11. Love the series and love the author even more! Once I start a book it's so hard to put it down! Love the harmless addicts site for all of us that can't get enough of ALH and Melissa, the discussions are great and I have found so many new friends to talk with about BSDM from her stories. Yes we maybe a little crazy on the addicts site but it's cause we love Melissa and what she writes!

  12. I haven't read any of your books yet.
It is amazing that there can be so many ways for authors to write in one genre. Paranormal is the same. Every one is different and developes their stories differently. Thank heaven for that. I'm off to check out your books.

  13. Being in the room with some of the Queens of the genre at AAD was awesomesauce, as one of my readers would say. The room was packed, SRO, and the Q&A session was intelligent, respectful, and informative! So can’t wait to see you all again next year (when *I* get to do panels!).

And I am so with you on character-driven stories. Heck, I don’t even try to plot a book. I just put the characters on the screen and see where they take me. It’s been one helluva a ride, but that’s why you, Joey Hill, Cherise Sinclair, Lexi Blake, Eliza Gayle, Shayla Black, Leah Brooke, Heathier Ranier, Sophie Oak, and so many others are the stars of the genre. That’s what readers want, too!

Now, on to see what else has been covered in this blog series, because I’m up on the 30th!

No need to enter me in the drawing. I’d like one of the readers to win. (But I do have about six Harmless books on my book pile or Kindle, for when I get to read for fun again!)
