A Random Musing: Who are your favorite characters in the Lucky Harbor Series? (Voting Poll & Giveaway)

A Random Musing: Who are your favorite characters in the Lucky Harbor Series? (Voting Poll & Giveaway)

I’m so sad *sniff*. Lucky Harbor is over. I’ll never get to see another installment from this lovely little town and I’ll never read how Lucille perverts the next social media app *sob* I refuse to be completely saddened though as I’ve had a lot of fond memories of this series. This post is the first of a couple and the reason it’s the first it’s that it’s the voting post. Yes, dear readers I want to know who your favorites were. I’ll be telling you mine and then I’d like you to share yours on the polls below. I’m keeping it up for a week and then I shall share what the results were. Of course, I wouldn’t ask you to vote for nothing … oh there are prizes… I’m giving away a copy of a trilogy (Books 1-3, Books 4-6, Books 7-9 or books 10-12) within this series to one lucky commenter on this post, in a format of their choice. eFormat, Paperback, audiobook (from audible only and… Keep Reading »

Nix Musing : Guest-Posts and Blog-tours : When do I take part?

Nix Musing : Guest-Posts and Blog-tours : When do I take part?

This week, I have had multiple emails publicising blog-tours and asking for participation. Sometimes, I have had more than one email for the same tour as the tour host hasn’t got enough hosts signed up and they are asking people to help out. Some people would help out the tour host at this point (because the tour-hosts are good people and send good promo our way) but I just can’t do it. If I haven’t signed up after the original email, there is a reason why. My blog is important to me. The content I put up there represents me and, although it took me a while to realise this fact, I now do everything I can to protect the integrity of it. If I put up promo for a book, it is because I recommend either it or the author and I won’t just put something up there to fill an empty day on my schedule. Blog tours come in a variety of formats; promo blasts (the cover… Keep Reading »

Random Musings : The future at Scorching Book Reviews (For now…..)

Random Musings : The future at Scorching Book Reviews (For now…..)

As Sheldon states, I do, in fact need to get a life. Between work, the blog and reading for the blog, I am actually struggling to get a balance. I don’t want to stop blogging but things need to change. I do have the option of asking if another blog wants me but I’m still kinda set on running Scorching Book Reviews so I’m going to change things up a bit, get a bit more scheduled and a bit more organised and maybe take a few guest reviews if people want to do them for me. So, what’s changing? Well, I have decided to do a “bare-minimum” approach. I’m going to decide what I HAVE to do each week and, if I have a lax week at the mortgage paying job, add to it if I can and not stress too much if I don’t. I haven’t accepted review requests on the blog for around 2 years but somehow my TR pile still resembles a mountain… that needs to… Keep Reading »

Random Musing Post : What I look for in a holiday read.

Random Musing Post : What I look for in a holiday read.

Ever since I bought my Kindle. it’s been easier for me to choose my perfect holiday read. It used to be that I used to have pick just 2 or 3 paperbacks but now I can pick a butt-load. Holiday reads for me are specific. They have to fit a particular set of criteria and so I thought I’d share them and some of my favourites. I know I’m an odd-bod for having holiday read criteria but we all know I read books to fit my mood … They have to be light I’m not a fan of huge angst in my holiday reads. I want light, fresh and fun.   LOVE CAN HAPPEN IN A HEARTBEAT. Grace never thought she’d be starting her life over from scratch. Losing everything has landed her in Lucky Harbor, working as a dog walker for overwhelmed ER doctor Josh Scott. But the day his nanny fails to show up, Grace goes from caring for Josh’s loveable mutt to caring for his rambunctious kids…. Keep Reading »

Nix Review – Why I don’t read reviews which include casting photographs before I read a book.

Nix Review – Why I don’t read reviews which include casting photographs before I read a book.

Over the last few months, I have noticed a growing trend on GoodReads. It no longer seems good enough to just review a book, now people are adding their own “casting choice” photo’s to go along with them. What I mean by this is that there will be pictures added, usually of actresses and actors, that are the reviewers representation of what the character looks like. I say usually actors or actresses but there have been models I’m not familiar with (dicey ground Ladies and Gents … if the images are copyrighted, you are playing with fire) or even porn shots (not cool … it’s not an age-restricted site). So why do I not like reviews including such pictures? More often than not, they are only a problem when I’m looking at reviews before I read a book. As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and these reviews often include pictures that, although obviously work for the blogger, just don’t work for me. I have the… Keep Reading »

Random Musing Post : How important is an audio-book narrator?

Random Musing Post : How important is an audio-book narrator?

I’m a fairly new audio-book user. It will never be the way I read for many many reasons; I can’t listen to a book I’ve never read before (concentration issues), the UK market is still pretty crappy (Geo-restrictions… don’t get me started!) and I also have silly memory issues that means that if I don’t listen to the book in one sitting, I may forget minor plot points. That being said, I do enjoy them when I’m not in the mood for reading or am doing something that requires no concentration. I’m used to book covers, blurbs or even author behavior (sorry, it’s true) either turning me on to or off a book, but now I’m having to deal with a new issue; the narrator. I have been listening to a fabulous series on audio, enthusiastically downloading the next in the series every time my new credits hit. I’ve even marked a few books on GR as to read as, if I like them, I may download the audio as… Keep Reading »

Random Musing – My name is Nix and I have a book buying problem…. help!

Random Musing – My name is Nix and I have a book buying problem…. help!

I have a problem …. a book buying problem. I know, I know, you all expect me to say that I have a book related problem but I think that you possibly imagined it would be a reading related issue. I could cope with that. If I had read all of the books thatI had bought, I would be a happy lady. But I haven’t and the problem is getting worse. No, I am not spending all the household food budget on Contemporary romance or anything, it’s more of an “I have no idea where to start” kind of problem with a side of “if OH and me ever get a joint account, he will be very mad and (attempt) to stop my one-click habit” (we all know that is one fight he shall never win!). My “Have-bought-to read” shelf on GoodReads says I have 323 books on my mountainous to-read pile. It isn’t that. It isn’t close to that number as I never update that shelf unless I have… Keep Reading »

Random Musings : Things that I wish I’d know before I started blogging…(Warning, contains swearing)

Random Musings : Things that I wish I’d know before I started blogging…(Warning, contains swearing)

In February, the blog turned 3. For three fantastic years I’ve read, and reviewed, some fabulous books, met some fantastic authors and hosted some amazing events. I wouldn’t change a second of it but, when I started, I was very naive about the book blogging. There are things I wish I knew before I started, things that I’ve had to learn to accept and deal with. Would it have stopped me? No, but it would have been nice to have been prepared. Here are the things I wish I knew before I started Scorching Book Reviews. 1. It’s hard work Seriously, you will be doing shit for the blog all of the damn time. If I’m not reviewing, I’m answering emails. If I’m not reading, I’m searching out new books. With reviews, memes, tours, editing, blog design, email correspondence and many more tasks that escape me, this is not a part-time hobby.   2. You will get some shit for negative reviews from authors Some authors’ consider their work their… Keep Reading »

Random Musings : Amazon may be known as the bad guy by publishers but, for this UK romance reader, they are a necessity

Random Musings : Amazon may be known as the bad guy by publishers but, for this UK romance reader, they are a necessity

This week, my twitter has been awash with people talking about the Hachette-Amazon row (for background, see the article here). I’ve seen authors say they are pulling their books from Amazon, bloggers saying they are never buying from there again and, with this looking to go on for months and months, I can only see this situation getting messier and messier. I’d love to stand by the authors I love, love to take a stand against “the giant” but, for me as an international reader, it really isn’t feasible. As much as I loved reading before I became a kindle girl, I wasn’t much of a romance reader. The UK market isn’t awash with romance, bookshops offering much smaller selections and favouring other genres. If I wanted to read a wider selection, I had to import them but I had no idea what to choose as no one I knew was reading romance. Then I discovered GoodReads and I had more brains to pick on what to chose but my options… Keep Reading »
