Good Smut Event Day One: Author Guestpost and Giveaway – Love is a Battlefield by Kat Black

Posted in Uncategorized / 19 Comments

(And before we get started, I want to say to those of you who might be feeling the sudden urge to channel Pat Benatar on the strength of the title – just go ahead and give in. There’s absolutely no shame in it. That song’s a classic.)

*Ahem* Right. So, as this is specifically a ‘Good Smut’ event the lovely Nix is hosting here, let’s also give this post the more targeted subheading of: ‘The Bedroom is a Battlefield’. I’m using the term metaphorically, of course (but if your particular brand of kink runs to a military bent, please do feel free to take things as literally as you like), to convey conflict and tension, strategy and negotiation, sneaky ambushes, passionate defense and ultimate surrender.

As a writer and as a reader, I find these are the elements that work best to create not only strong emotional, but also great sexual, chemistry between fictional characters. Get the mix right and the resulting physical reaction can be explosive. And what could be more thrilling than a sexy scene that goes off with a bang – one that threatens to scorch the page, melt the screen and steam up the eyeballs?

To varying degrees, I employ all of the above tactics in my stories, using them to gently herd my troops up against the very edges of their self-imposed frontline boundaries, to coax them out of the comfortable safety of their trenches and into the high-risk engagement zone. Because it’s only when they find themselves with nowhere left to hide that they have to face up to their fears and vulnerabilities.

Let my characters give you some examples: In one of my early anthology shorts, Lucy has to deal with the consequences of getting caught by her gorgeous landlord – fantasizing about him whilst pleasuring herself, naked, on his bed. In my first novella, it’s good-girl Gemma’s own prejudices that she needs to battle when faced with the irresistible advances of two very sexy rowers. My next release sees Frankie desperately fighting the aching desire she still feels for her estranged husband, even though sex was the weapon he’d used to break her heart when he cheated on her. There’s a book I’ve just signed contracts on that follows Sam’s attempts to redress the skewed power dynamic in her relationship by proposing the bound surrender of her impossibly alpha, and very reluctant, lover…

Oh, dear – wait.

Seeing it all listed out like that, I’m afraid my methods of character manipulation don’t come across as very gentle or coaxing at all, do they? More like lobbing live grenades, really (And, yep, still running with the battle metaphor!). But I promise you, whatever else they have to go through, they do all eventually get to prove the adage ‘the greater the risk, the greater the reward’, and find their happy endings. And I assure you I’m not nearly so callous or cruel as I sound.

Or am I? *Bhwahahahaha*

  1. Awesome post! Your books sound really good. And lol, you throw live grenades at your characters? I'd love to read about it!

  2. I'm in, bring on the smut… and if you have a description for 'Love, Interrupted' you should probably add it to the book in Goodreads.

  3. Your books sound great. Explosive books are much better than others, more interesting. Thank you for the post and giveaway!

Mmmm “The Bedroom is a Battlefield”, I just Love the metaphor…Kat you can scorch my pages, melt my screen and steam up the eyeballs with your writing…actually I can't wait to get my hands on your Books just so that can happen! 😉 I’d Love it!!!! I know, I'm Bad!!! 😉

  6. I couldn't agree more. Our limitations are usually self-imposed. We have to get past our own hangups in order to evolve. Sometimes we need help stepping out of our comfort zone. But in the end it is our choice to actually do it.

  7. While reading your post, I kept picturing that scene in '30 Something' where she's dancing on the bed singing 'Love is a Battlefield' with all those little teenage girls. Not at all appropriate when thinking smut…LMAO!! Thx for the giveaway op!! 😉
