Christmas in Freewill

Christmas Eve, the Diamond Saloon is empty of its people, and Pearl la Monte has a hankering to retire early. A pounding at the Diamond’s door rids her of such a fool notion. Her irritation rises when she sees the prissy, polite-like Garrett standing outside.

Ethan Garrett has a powerful need to gain succor. When the saloon’s voluptuous redheaded singer scowls at him from the threshold of the Diamond, he doesn’t stop to think on how his ire at her has disappeared. Or how he just wants to spend some time in her company.

When a blizzard storms in, trapping them, will they spend their time arguing or find their irritation for each other disguises something more?

Fools Gold is the follow up novella/short story to Rough Diamond. At just over 50 pages it is a quick read which gets straight to the point and for me, perfect for that bus ride home. This is the tale of Pearl la Monde, featured singer and star of the Diamond spectacular whom we met in Rough Diamond. In this Pearl is running the show and managing the Diamond for Alice, all seems rosy, but there is one person who is the burr in her saddle- Ethan Garrett, Alice’s former coal surveyor, but a man who knows just what he wants; to ride Miss Pearl until the cows come home. So when he knocks on the Diamond’s door during a blizzard on Christmas Eve, Pearl is forced to be charitable and let him in. This is where their story begins.

It’s a fun little quickie, a bit of joy in the afternoon as one might say, short, straight to the point, yet satisfying and leaves you with a happy little glow.

I mean we have to be honest, full character development is not possible in 50 pages, but Cassandra Dean does try and definitely manages to flesh out the characters enough for you to care and understand their motivations, it helps of course that we met them in Rough Diamond. But you would not have to read Rough Diamond to be able to enjoy Fools Gold, it can be read as a stand alone and make perfect sense.

I really liked it, I liked Pearl and Ethan, I really liked the scene on the bar (nudge, nudge, wink wink) I just wish they had a full novel.  I give Fools Gold 3.5 short story stars out of 5.  A frisky little afternoon quickie, perfect for that bus ride home.
