A Nix Erotic Review – Protecting What’s His by Tessa Bailey (5 Stars)

She’s running from the law, and the law wants her bad.

The opportunity was just too damn delicious for Ginger Peet to pass up. The purse full of money she finds—$50,000 to be exact—could give her and her teen sister the new start they need. So she grabs the cash, her gothy sibling, and their life-sized statue of Dolly Parton, and blows outta Nashville in a cloud of dust. Chicago, here we come…

Turns out, Chicago has some pretty hot cops. Hot, intense, naughty-lookin’ cops like Derek Tyler, who looks like he could eat a girl up and leave her begging for more. And more. Tempting as he is, getting involved with the sexy homicide lieutenant next door poses a teensy problem for a gal who’s on the lam. But one thing is certain—Derek’s onto her, and he wants more than just a taste.

And as far as he’s concerned, possession is nine-tenths of the law.

This book review is being produced as part of the blog tour. This did not effect the nature of this review.
When I read the blurb to this book, I went in expecting steamy content. What I wasn’t expecting was a book that produced so much heat there was condensation on my windows. This book was a surprise find and, although the lead character sometimes crossed the line from possessive hero to obnoxious bastard, I adored the man and his very dirty ways. This book is definitely more erotic than romantic but damn is it palpitation inducing….
Derek will be the bone of contention with all readers of this book. How possessive is too possessive? How big of an alpha-hole can a lead hero be without a book losing the reader? Here’s my take; the majority of the time I drooled all over the pages he was in but there were a couple of times I would have bitch–slapped him in Ginger’s position. For some reason, with every genuine good/hot deed he did he had to balance it out with a moment of true ass-hattery. Her apartment floods, he wants her to move in with him until it sorted.  How does he achieve this good deed? Emotional blackmail of course! He walks away from a truly aroused Ginger as he doesn’t want to be a one-off tryst. I adored him for this but what does he do then? He gets all his subordinates to go to the bar she works at to hover round the bar, drink and basically act like a barrier between her and any horny, drunk customers. I want to hump his leg and beat him upside the head all at the same time but I just could not do anything than swoon when he said something particularly dreamy to Ginger. Don’t get me wrong; he never actually mistreated Ginger but some of his possessive actions towards her left a lot to be desired.
Ginger is a young woman who has had too much adult responsibility dumped upon her shoulders at too young an age. Forced to bring up her sister, she flees her terrible upbringing and moves to Derek’s building. This is really a case of heart over-ruling head. She wants to be offended by his actions but she just couldn’t be. She gave him hell and made him worked when he tried his hardest to hack her off, but she couldn’t deny how her body reacted to his slightly Dom like behaviour. I respected the hell out of her because she had some serious balls. She had worked her upmost to support and protect her sibling and her one fear was that being ripped away from her. She gave as good as she got in this book and it made me want her HEA more. She is so strong I don’t think she would have ever let a weaker man near her. Derek may be an arse but he knew how to support her at all times.
The sex. Oh. My. God. The sex is ridiculous. This book is one where you must read in a place where you don’t mind getting all steamed up. It will happen to you. I promise. All of the sex shows Derek as the Dominant partner, as Ginger as the slightly masochist submissive partner. The sex is all pretty much rough and hard, making sure the scenes ooze desperation and lust. I have never been so affected by an erotica novel and I can’t tell why.
Maybe, it’s about the way he talks to her

“Let me be clear, Ginger, since you insit on talking in circles. I want you underneath me in my bed. I want to be buried inside you so deep that I have to remind you of your own name. And I want those motherfuckers leering at you from the other side of the bar to smell me on you for a week afterward.”

Maybe, it was his dirty mouth/mind

“From the time we walk in the door to my apartment, you will have less than a minute before I put my cock inside you. No foreplay. No kissing. There won’t be any time, because you’ve got me so strung so damn tight I barely think straight. I need you to keep yourself wet for me on the ride home. Starting now.”

Maybe it was just ‘cos he was a dreamy Dom who got completely unreasonable sometimes ‘cos he was batty for her… I dunno J

This book is one of the most smokin’ pieces of literature I have ever read.  I laughed, I swooned, I dumped myself in ice-water…..  I recommend you read this book, but not in public. Unless, of course, that’s your thing…. J
