FTC : I was approached to do this review by the publisher. I was not paid for it and have given my fair and honest opinion.
Well, this book was unexpected. A tale of secrets and intrigue, this book was a fabulously magical romp that kept me engrossed from start to finish.
The hidden is a world full of magical creatures, unseen to the mortal inhabitants of the world. Once “awakened” to this world, you can never go back to the life you know but you may never reveal it’s existence either.
Ruby knew nothing about her Dragon heritage until the murder of her Uncle. Still grieving the lost of the only parental figure she has ever known, she then has to deal with this whole new set of creatures and rules. I felt so sorry for her. She also has to deal with the incredibly grumpy, yet sexy, Cyn. He both attracts her and annoys the shit out of her (a combustible combination all romance readers are familiar with) but no matter how close they get he insists on keeping her at arms length whilst he prepares her for the dangers ahead. It frustrates her in an already frustrating situation but I was overall incredibly impressed with the way she deals with it all. The bombshells keep dropping for her but she attempts to deal with them all in a way I know I never could. She was pretty kickass.
Cyn is a man with guilt. A an ex member of the guard, he was responsible for executing hidden inhabitants who broke the law. He believed that every person he had to execute was guilty, and he followed orders without question, until it came to the job where he was ordered to execute a much younger Ruby and her parents. He found he couldn’t quite live with the thought of executing a child and instead quit and became her secret protector. Then she turns up on his doorstep and turns his world inside out. Gone is the innocent child that he spared and in her place is a sexy, kick-ass female who tests his patience and his resolve. I enjoyed watching him struggle with his lust towards her (I know, I’m a sadist) and watch him try to fit her into his very neat world. He was completely befuddled by her and it was so damn cute!
The sexual tension between them made the book for me but I have to say that the world building was incredibly impressive too. It felt very Harry Potter-like and I adored it, completely lost in the magic of it all. The suspense was interwoven within the magical world of the Hidden and it kept me guessing all the way through. I loved it!
If you like tales of Myth and Magic and prefer your heroines Kick-ass, this is one to try!
