Sapphire Flames (Hidden Legacy, #4)

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews comes an enthralling new trilogy set in the Hidden Legacy world, where magic means power, and family bloodlines are the new currency of society…

In a world where magic is the key to power and wealth, Catalina Baylor is a Prime, the highest rank of magic user, and the Head of her House. Catalina has always been afraid to use her unique powers, but when her friend’s mother and sister are murdered, Catalina risks her reputation and safety to unravel the mystery.

But behind the scenes powerful forces are at work, and one of them is Alessandro Sagredo, the Italian Prime who was once Catalina’s teenage crush. Dangerous and unpredictable, Alessandro’s true motives are unclear, but he’s drawn to Catalina like a moth to a flame.

To help her friend, Catalina must test the limits of her extraordinary powers, but doing so may cost her both her House–and her heart.

Genre : UF, Paranormal, Strong Romantic Elements

Nix GoodReads Shelves : Paranormal, romance, violence, magic, un-requited love, smexy times,  part of a series, NA-ish, First – POV, virgin-heroine, amazing-side-characters, mysterious hero, play-boy-hero.

Content Warnings : Graphic violence

Writing Style : First POV

Characters :

Catalina : I liked Catalina. She was in a difficult position having taken over House Baylor and she felt pressure with her every move. She took on her current case because she felt she had to but she handled it all whilst channelling Victoria Tremaine (which made me chuckle). When Alessandro turns up, she has no idea on how to handle him and so she tries to push him away – it was fun to see her fight against her feelings whilst trying to protect him (completely against the gender norm here!).

Alessandro: Alessandro was an international man of mystery. Never truly revealing his motivations, he joins in the case with Catalina, saving her time after time without ever really expecting anything in return. He exudes arrogance when he is showing his Prime face however, when they are alone, the fierce, protective Alpha appears and I enjoyed reading about him. I can’t wait to read more about his true motives… whatever they may be!

The Rest of House Baylor : I love the rest of House Baylor and we got to see them all! Leon and Grandma remain my favourite but I have to admit that I am very very intrigued by Bern in this one.

Plot :

The Plot is quite reminiscent of the first trilogy. Catalina starts a case, which no one else will touch, due to the house rules, ending up embroiled in a deeper conspiracy plot that is designed to break the status quo. She is helped along the way by Alessandro,  Alpha man with his own motives and rules who attracts her in a way no other man has. Chaos ensues. Stuff gets blown up. People die. New powers are introduced to us. Grandma gets a new tank. New characters end up living in the Baylor house.

I laughed at Grandma, Bug and Leon.

I swooned with Catalina over Alessandro.

I loved it.

Favourite Moment :

Leon. All Leon moments.

Least Favourite Moment :

I found some of Catalina’s inner monologue a little young and I wasn’t too sure about that.

Re-readability :

I’m listening to it currently – so high!

“Ilona Andrews” is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army.

Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade.(Gordon is still sore about that.)Gordon and Ilona currently reside in Texas with their two children and many dogs and cats.

They have co-authored several NYT and USAT bestselling series. They are currently working on urban fantasy of Kate Daniels, the paranormal romance of Hidden Legacy, and their independently published series, Innkeeper Chronicles.
