My name is Rob. I don’t really believe you exist. Ever since that guy ran a red light and hit my dad, I’ve known you weren’t real. Because if you were, the driver would have had insurance, so we could have looked after Dad properly. The doctors would have been able to fix him, so Mom didn’t have to do so much. And Dad would have gotten better, because we needed him. And I’m finding his shoes too big to fill.
But Shawn thinks I say no to myself too much and he’s been nagging me to write this letter to you, an imaginary elf. He even bought me a fancy Christmas envelope and a Christmas stamp. If you were real, I’d suspect you were working late, or early, last April, when I stumbled over him at work. It’s funny—I don’t believe in love at first sight, but if you’d made him in your workshop, he couldn’t have been a better match.
So, Christmas wishes. Shawn says I have to and he’s promised me a surprise if I do this. I love his surprises. Sometimes, I think he reads my mind.
Okay, here goes. I want a Christmas. A real Christmas, like you see in the movies where everything is bleak, but the last scene is the whole family gathered together for a big Christmas dinner, with a beautiful Christmas tree in the background. I want eggnog, and a fireplace, and stockings stuffed full of weird little gifts. I want a mound of presents under the tree that are perfect for everyone they’re being given to. I want a Christmas tree full of wonderful memories. My family. And Shawn.
And if all you can manage for this year is one thing, can you please make it Shawn?

When Rob’s dad was injured by an uninsured driver, it spelled the end of Rob’s carefree childhood and, more important to Rob, the idyllic Christmases they used to have. Hard work and sacrifice nets him a degree in computer programming and then a contract at a rapidly-growing video game company. Things are looking up, especially when he meets his new System Administrator. But the closer it gets to Christmas, the more bugs there are in the system.
Shawn’s found him. The Guy. But Rob’s had it rough and it’s been years since he’s been anything but responsible. It all comes boiling to the surface when a family financial crisis is followed by a work emergency that ruins Rob’s plans to bring Shawn home to meet the family over Christmas holidays.
With Rob’s mood growing darker the closer it gets to Christmas, Shawn needs to find some way to give Rob the Christmas he’s so desperate for. And he just might have the plan…
