My Year in Books : Authors I have discovered in 2020

Posted December 28, 2020 by Nix in Books 2020 / 2 Comments

So, I have decided to do 4 posts for my End of Year series.

My Year, like a lot of other peoples, has featured a lot of books. Early on in the Pandemic, I had to isolate from DH for a period of 12 weeks. It was hard and books, alongside Netflix, got me through it. In my eyes, any book that brought me joy, deserves a rec.

I have been rubbish at reviewing over the last few years but I have read a heck of a lot of books so this will be my way of featuring them.

I’m starting with this post as it feels like the natural place to start. Next up will be Comfort reads, then Top books not in 2020 and then Top books in 2020.

I found a lot of new-to-me authors this year mainly because I signed up to KU. I did this as I knew I would be reading more and I do NOT regret it. I have since bought some of the books I have read on KU as I believe in owning my faves and some of these books are faves.

So, these are the authors that were new to me in 2020 who I would put on the auto-try list (remember, I no longer have an autobuy list). A lot have been publishing for YEARS but I only found them this year. I recommend them all. I will be linking to their GR page so you can see if there are any books you like the look of ..

Some of these books may or may not feature on other posts too .. we shall see!

Hailey Edwards
Hailey Edwards
Genres : PNR/UF
GR Link : HERE

I started reading Hailey Edwards when I got my Kindle Unlimited subscription however I own multiple books. She writes fabulous UF series and I have read, and loved, three of them.

My personal favourite is the Necromancer series and its spin-off. This series is set in a Supernatural world and the world building is fabulous.

It is written as a dual POV, with Greer, the lead being written in First person, and the other being written in third. It does take a second to get your head round it however once I was in, I was abosolutely hooked. I adore Greer, I adore Linus, I want Boaz to jump off a metaphorical cliff…..

If you like UF then I think this is a series you could love.

CW here for wrongful imprisonment, torture and death of a parent.

Getting Schooled (The Wright Brothers, #1)
Christina C. Jones
Genres : Contemp. Romance
GR Link : HERE

Another author found from KU. I started with Getting Schooled (amazeballs but CW for adult student/teachers aide relationship) but I’ve read a whole host of other books. Christina C Jones has a huge backlist but I haven’t read a book I didn’t enjoy.

If you enjoy sexy romance with strong heroines, this is an author you want to try. They are funny as hell too ….

The Opposite of You (Opposites Attract, #1)
Rachel Higginson
Genres : Contemp. Romance
GR Link : HERE

I own the above book and I actually cannot tell you how many times I have read it. It is the perfect enemies to lovers romance – I adored it.

Rachel Higginson is another author discovered from Kindle Unlimited. It started from a rec when I asked for Enemies to Lovers books and I fell down the rabbit hole.

If you like enemies to lovers, in first person, I recommend the above series but I have loved ALL of the books I have read from Rachel Higginson.

Sweatpants Season
Danielle Allen
Genres : Contemp. Romance
GR Link : HERE

Another KU find (can I say, having KU this year has completely opened up my reading this year). I started with Sweatpants season (look at the cover … tell me you wouldn’t buy it for that alone!) but I’ve read others (I still have others to read).

Danielle Allen writes really good dialogue and I think that is the thing that draws me into her books (All the one’s I have read are first POV). That and they are all pretty steamy 🙂

If you like steamy romance, try Danielle Allen.

Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic (The Dowser #1)
Meghan Ciana Doidge
Genres : PNR
GR Link : HERE

I want to say this series was a recommendation from Lillie on Twitter. I asked for UF/PNR recs and this was the series that was recommended – I adore it. It is fun, fluffy, light and a little bit silly … it was what I needed in 2020.

I have read the entire series and have the oracle series on my list – I have enjoyed them all.

If you like fluffy first POV UF, in a world filled with supernatural creatures and magic, maybe give this a try. There are 21 books in this series so there is a lot to go with …

Rosemary and Rue (October Daye, #1)
Seanan McGuire
Genres : UF
GR Link : HERE

I am so late to the party with this series but, my God, is it GOOD. It is not an easy read by any stretch of the imagination (CW for violence, Kidnap, sexual assault, trauma over the course of the series – check GR for CW for individual titles) but it is so well crafted and so bloody brilliant.

Seanan McGuire is a master storyteller – she crafts such detailed worlds and magical characters. This series is about a half-changeling within a supernatural world. I have book one of the Wayward Children series on my Kindle ready to go and I can’t wait.

If you like UF which is filled with grit, try this series.
