Series: The Edge #1
Published by NYLA on 2009-09-29
Genres: Fantasy, Paranormal, Romance, Urban
Rose Drayton lives on the Edge, between the world of the Broken (where people drive cars, shop at Wal-Mart, and magic is a fairy tale) and the Weird (where blueblood aristocrats rule, changelings roam, and the strength of your magic can change your destiny). Only Edgers like Rose can easily travel from one world to the next, but they never truly belong in either.
Rose thought if she practiced her magic, she could build a better life for herself. But things didn’t turn out how she planned, and now she works a minimum wage, off the books job in the Broken just to survive. Then Declan Camarine, a blueblood noble straight out of the deepest part of the Weird, comes into her life, determined to have her (and her power).
But when a terrible danger invades the Edge from the Weird, a flood of creatures hungry for magic, Declan and Rose must work together to destroy them—or they’ll devour the Edge and everyone in it.

What I liked
I’ve had this on my kindle for two years and I’ve never read it. I tried a couple of times but I just couldn’t; I wanted this to be a Kate and Curran type book and it truly isn’t.
This time, I went in fresh and I immediately fell in to the plot.
Ilona Andrews creates fantastic worlds. In this one, the world is split into the Broken (where no magic exists) and the Weird (where magic exists). This tale is set in the Edge, the barrier between the two worlds. This is the place where only a certain few can survive and it is the home to the wonderful heroine that is Rose. Rose is amazing. A single woman looking after her two kid brothers, she does what she needs to survive and to keep the scumbags, that want her the only for her strong magic, at bay. When Declan drops into her life, a rich blue-blood, she keeps him her life not through choice but, again, to survive. He’s obviously keeping secrets but the risk is worth it. I know this is supposed to be their tale but, for me, it was her tale. It was her character that developed to become something more than provider and protector and her personality that drove the plot.
Aside from the world politics, I adored watching the relationship develop between these two characters. Rose is strong, funny and completely devoted to her family. I know some people hate kids in a plot but I just think it brings such a different dimension to all the characters and with Rose, it gave her an edge that made me want her to survive and succeed. When the spanner that is Declan is thrown into her world, her entire life is thrown into chaos. Not only does he seem to bring creepy monsters that want to destroy her world, he brings an attraction that she in no way wants and it was delicious to read. Their relationship is full of witty banter, fiery disagreements and mutual negotiation. I loved it.
The dark PNR plot that threaded through this book was so addictive to read. It was so wonderfully written, so deliciously dark, that I felt like I was fighting the bad guys alongside them. I’m so happy that this is a series book because I get to read more (although I was a little upset when I realized that book two wasn’t more Declan and Rose!).
What I didn’t like
Honestly, I struggled with the opening scenes. I had no idea what was going on and it set a very dark tone that didn’t set well with me but, after the world-building started, it made more sense. I think on the second time round I won’t be as affected.
Overall, a fantastic start to a new series by an author I should know to trust. I’ve bought the whole series of this sexy PNR and I’m doomed to be reading until 3 in the morning once again … ah well 🙂
