Top Picks is a weekly meme that we do here at Scorching Book Reviews. In this post, I highlight the Romance books that I want to read that are released this week. They are books on my TR pile and only books we are interested in spending money on. I feel I have to point out that books in a series are only going to be featured on here if I have started the series.
I reviewed this earlier in the week. I loved it. I gave it 5 stars and I have pre-ordered the audio. I loved it.
Set in the same world as Faith Hunter’s New York Times bestselling Jane Yellowrock novels, the fourth Soulwood novel stars Nell Ingram, who channels her power from the earth.
Nell can draw magic from the land around her, and lately she’s been using it to help the Psy-Law Enforcement Division, which solves paranormal crimes. Joining the team at PsyLED has allowed her to learn more about her powers and the world she always shunned–and to find true friends.
Head agent Rick LaFleur shifts into a panther when the moon calls him, but this time, something has gone wrong. Rick calls Nell from a riverbank–he’s naked, with no memory of how he came to be there, and there’s a dead black cat, sacrificed in a witch circle and killed by black magic, lying next to him.
Then more animals turn up dead, and team rushes to investigate. A blood-witch is out to kill. But when it seems as if their leader is involved in the crime, the bonds that hold the team together could shatter at any moment
I love Alyssa Cole and this series is outstanding. If you like historical romance, do yourself a favour and try this.
An assassination plot that could end the Civil War, and a hidden enemy that could destroy a secret league of unsung heroes …
Daniel Cumberland, born free in Massachusetts, studied law with dreams of helping his people—dreams that died the night he was kidnapped and sold into slavery. Daniel is rescued, but he’s a changed man. When he’s offered entry into the Loyal League, the covert organization of Black spies who helped free him, he seizes the opportunity for vengeance against the Confederacy and those who support it.
When the Union Army occupies the Florida home of Cuban Janeta Sanchez, daughter of an enslaved woman and the plantation owner who married her, her family’s wealth does not protect her father from being imprisoned. Under duress and blaming herself for the arrest, Janeta agrees to infiltrate a group called the Loyal League as a double agent—and finds a cause truly worth the sacrifice.
Daniel is aggravated by the headstrong and much too observant new detective he’s paired with, and Janeta is intrigued by the broken but honorable man she is tasked with betraying. As they embark on a mission to intercept Jefferson Davis and thwart European meddling, their dual hidden agendas are threatened by the ghosts of their pasts and a growing affection that could strengthen both the Union and their souls—or lead to their downfall.
I haven’t read the first in the series but I do have it on my TR pile.
I know how it feels to lose everything—to watch my world crash down around me, unable to do shit about it.
I was a broken man when the Skulls took me in. They helped me pick up the pieces, became my family, earned my loyalty.
Then my past storms back into my life with spiky heels and an attitude to match, and my loyalty is tested. Amanda doesn’t just own the company I work for, she owns my heart. She’ll always own it, even though her betrayal sent me into hell in the first place
But being together now is not as simple as it was back then. We’ve both changed. After thirteen years, we’re worlds apart. I don’t belong in her world, and she wants nothing to do with mine.
Problem is, I don’t think I can let her walk away from me…not again.
I have read quite a few Terry Spears books and have always enjoyed them – this is on the list.
They’re not the only ones on the prowl…but they’re the most dangerous…

They’re going international to take down a killer and he can guard Valerie all day long. But guard his heart? He doesn’t stand a chance.
