Celebrating Romance 2018 : New and Debut Author Recommendations by Erin McLellan (Incl. Giveaway)

Celebrating Romance 2018 : New and Debut Author Recommendations by Erin McLellan (Incl. Giveaway)

I’m thrilled to be here on Scorching Book Reviews today. Nix, thank you so much for hosting me! Today, I’m talking about discovering new authors! As a reader, I have a tendency to focus all of my buying and reading power on my favorite and familiar auto-buy authors. That’s not a bad thing at all, but I’ve found that I also miss out on new authors if I’m not actively seeking them out. New and debut authors have to work extra hard to make a dent in a romance market that’s so rich with new releases and established authors. This year I made it my goal to read more new and debut authors. There are some really great authors just now starting their careers, and these are some of my favorites! All of these authors had a debut come out in 2017 or 2018.   To Love a Scandalous Duke by Liana de la Rosa This m/f historical romance has everything—scandal, murder, fraud, secrets, betrayal, twins, a hidden diary,… Keep Reading »

Celebrating Romance : Author Interview from Laura Huntsaker

Celebrating Romance : Author Interview from Laura Huntsaker

Laura Hunsaker is an award-winning writer who writes romance set in the Scottish Highlands, but with a twist. Somewhere in between Historical and Paranormal, she writes Scottish Time Travel Romance and Paranormal Romance. She’s hard at work right now, writing about protective men paired with strong women who knock them off their feet. She is a hybrid author being both traditionally published and self-published, as well as a member of Romance Writers of America® Cactus Rose Chapter and the Celtic Hearts Romance Writers.       Why do you read Romance? You know, I want everyone to have a happy ending. It sounds silly, but I get annoyed when I read a non-Romance and there are characters who would make a perfectly nice couple who don’t wind up together. I enjoy the journey the two characters have, and the bumps and dips on the way. And who doesn’t want a good Happily Ever After? What was the first romance book you read? Oh man, I remember this so vividly. I… Keep Reading »

This week’s Top Picks are… Status on TR list: Vivian Arend’s cowboys are my some of my favourite. This one is a second-chance romance with a hero struggling with his emotional health – one-click! Celebrating Romance : A Guest Post from Jodie Griffin (Incl. Giveaway of Twice in a Lifetime)

Celebrating Romance : A Guest Post from Jodie Griffin (Incl. Giveaway of Twice in a Lifetime)

Hi, I’m Jodie Griffin and I write kinky erotic romance as well as contemporary romance with high heat levels. I jokingly say I don’t write NA, I write MA — Mature Adult. My latest book, TWICE INA LIFETIME, is a contemporary romance which features two women falling in love. They’re both about 50 years old—Eve just under, Talia just over. As a woman in my 50s, it was so much fun writing in my own age-lane, especially when it came to the way Eve and Talia speak, their idioms and their word choices and even their behavior.  No worries about “would they say this?” or “would they do this?” because I know they would—I do, and my friends do, and this is a book about us. And in spite of the fact that media and advertising try to tell us that women of a certain age are no longer sexual beings, I am here to call bullshit. Because women in their fifties are having sex…and they’re more comfortable than… Keep Reading »

Celebrating Romance 2018 : Why Women love to read sex, not watch it by Stacey Keith

Celebrating Romance 2018 : Why Women love to read sex, not watch it by Stacey Keith

It’s no secret that most romance novels have fully described sex scenes. From the relatively tame (kissing, light petting) to the wildly exotic (ménage, BDSM), romance is redefining what the whole world is reading right now. FIFTY SHADES OF GREY catapulted romance into the same global stratosphere that Harry Potter occupies for YA. Why? Because it’s explicitly, unabashedly sexy. Bitches, we’ve arrived. And I say it’s high time. In this age of #MeToo and #TimesUp, women are saying no to sexual harassment, but not to sex. Romance is a celebration of sex. It’s not the rote mechanical rutting of men’s fiction (ever read a sex scene in a western? No, thanks.) The way women describe sex is completely different. More evolved. Hotter. And the reason sex in romance novels works so beautifully is because it’s a natural consequence of emotion. No sex, not even in the raunchiest erotic romance, is impersonal. It’s all personal. That’s the key element that most male writers miss, the ingredient that makes sex in… Keep Reading »

Celebrating Romance Event : Love of Books and Food by Lia Violet (Incl. Giveaway)

Celebrating Romance Event : Love of Books and Food by Lia Violet (Incl. Giveaway)

Do you like Jello? Under my real name, I write a series of mysteries with recipes, based on my 1000+ vintage cookbook collection. I also give talks at libraries on food trends and history, including everything from Jello to WWII foods to favorite holiday cookies and candies.  Who knew so many people liked Spam? Of course, like all of you, I also love romance books. As a librarian and reviewer, it is my pleasure to read and help people find favorite authors all the time. Reading the previous posts here this month about all the delicious cowboys has only made me hungry for more books! When I started writing spicier books as Lia Violet, I found that my love of food followed. My writing partner Ginger Leone complained that in my first draft for Sweet Hearts I wrote more loving descriptions of the baked goods than the characters and passionate scenes!  Sweet Hearts is the first in our Hot Hearts Café series about an establishment run by faeries, in which… Keep Reading »

Celebrating Romance: So Much Love for Fake Relationships by Mia Sosa (Inc Gift Card Giveaway)

Celebrating Romance: So Much Love for Fake Relationships by Mia Sosa (Inc Gift Card Giveaway)

I’m a big fan of the fake relationship trope in romance. There, I said it. Yes, we know fake relationships never remain just that. Yes, we know the couple in question will eventually fall in love and live happily ever after, but in the meantime, that pretend relationship fosters delicious tension, occasionally features shared beds (squee), and causes lots of internal angst. *sighs dreamily* In my latest release, PRETENDING HE’S MINE, by-the-books Hollywood agent Julian Hart falls for his best friend’s younger sister, Ashley, a free-spirited woman who enjoys ruffling Julian’s feathers. The real complication is that Julian’s best friend is also his most prominent client, and Julian doesn’t want to jeopardize his career. But when Julian agrees to pretend to be Ashley’s boyfriend for a hometown wedding, he struggles to remember their relationship isn’t real. It’s a bunch of tropey goodness: best friend’s sibling, forced proximity, and of course, a pretend relationship. I’ll tell you this: Expect shenanigans.   Here’s an excerpt:   **** Ashley bounds down the… Keep Reading »

Celebrating Romance Event : Author Interview with Allison Temple

Celebrating Romance Event : Author Interview with Allison Temple

Why do you read Romance? Because it’s awesome? Because I love stories of people struggling to find their own peace and building a love that helps them find it. What was the first romance book you read? This is embarrassing. I came to romance soooo late. Like I was 27 or 28 late. I didn’t have a sister or a mom or an aunt with old Harlequins I could steal as a teenager. My first romance was Dream Warrior by Sherrilyn Kenyon and…I didn’t even know it was a romance. It was the height of the Twilight craze. I bought it in a drug store right because I needed something to read on a train ride. The blurb promised me vampires and that’s all I saw. It never occurred to me that it was a romance, but suddenly there were blow jobs on page 60 and I was blushing furiously because obviously everyone else on the train had psychic powers and could tell what I was reading. It’s been… Keep Reading »

#RombkLove Day 7 : Cowboy Romance (and why I love it)

#RombkLove Day 7 : Cowboy Romance (and why I love it)

Hello and welcome to Scorching Book Reviews. My name is Nix and I have a Cowboy Romance addiction. This post is a bit of a cross-post with my Celebrating Romance Event (see past posts) as I chose to celebrate Cowboy Romance! This is a laughable addiction to all who know me as, as I live in the UK, the likelihood of me meeting an actual Cowboy is probably less than me being struck by lightning. So, why do I like them so much I hear you ask? Well, sit down, this may take a while. While I have your attention, I’m Just going to break away from the direction of the post for a second, I just want to state that this post also features Cowgirls, not just cowboys. I’ve also taken a long hard look at the diversity of my reading habits recently and, I have to say, this is not as diverse a list as I would have liked. I am working to change that and any… Keep Reading »

In this post, we highlight the Romance books that we want to read that are released this week. They are books on our TR pile and only books we are interested in spending money on. This week is a little odd. There are so many releases that are book 8/9 in the series it is actually surprising. I am not highlighting books that far down the series; I can’t even fathom how to start! Instead, I’ve gone for books that caught my eyes but the majority are new to me. This week’s Top Picks are… Status on TR list: This looks right up my street. I’ve pre-ordered (at £2, it’s a bargain!) and this author is new-to-me. Two decades ago when a magical war nearly destroyed all societies, those with supernatural gifts emerged from the shadows to help save the humans. Yet despite… Keep Reading »
